ABOUT
Broadway star Syndee Winters and André Lafelle Roberson, descendent of the great Paul Robeson, bring an evening of music where entertainment is a given and the voices shine through to today with a message of optimism and equality for all.
When the times needed Voices of Freedom, those voices came in song and in the quality of character - in Mr. Paul Robeson and in Ms. Lena Horne.
Mr. Paul Robeson led by example - a singer whose songs resonated across racial lines, one of the first African American film actors, a professional athlete, a trained lawyer, an activist, often called the first black American superstar. His was a voice for truth and authenticity
Ms. Lena Horne, a singer whose songs resonated from films to Broadway, one of the first African American artists to be signed by a major film studio (MGM), an activist and trailblazer for women from Stormy Weather to The Wiz to her historic one-woman show on Broadway. Hers was a voice for integrity and awareness
Paul Robeson and Lena Horne were both Voices of Freedom.
"As an artist I come to sing, but as a citizen, I will always speak for peace, and no one can silence me in this." — Paul Robeson
"It's not the load that breaks you down, it's the way you carry it." — Lena Horne
