Biography
6-time Grammy® nominated vocalist – Nnenna Freelon
This is an evening that lies somewhere in the space between Ted Talks, a Tiny Desk concert, and an intimate fireside chat. Is it an evening of musical storytelling? An intimate conversation? An invitation to life’s unfolding?
Nnenna Freelon, six-time GRAMMY® nominated jazz singer and creator of the WUNC award-winning podcast GREAT GRIEF, takes an improvisational approach to life’s changes in her 75 minute musical life story presentation. She infuses this often-difficult subject – grief – with flashes of hope, humor and improvisational song.
Freelon insists on coming out as her authentic self which she describes as a storytelling jazz singer recently widowed in search of a new word for just that last part, widow. Accompanied by piano throughout, she shares stories of things she’s lost and found on her grief journey and what she’s learning about love. What cannot be expressed in words, flows seamlessly into song as she weaves together an altogether authentic, uplifting evening of storytelling music and conversation. Freelon brings a fresh perspective to the both universal and personal experience of loss. “Grieving” says Freelon, “is another way of loving.”
Prior to her husband Phil Freelon’s death from ALS in 2019, she recalls him asking her to promise that she’d keep on singing. GREAT GRIEF – LIVE! – a part of that promise keeping. An evening of story and songs from the heart with an emphasis on live!
